Secular vs. Religious: Identity Issues for Individuals Exiting Bible-based Cults
Wendy and Doug Duncan
For individuals leaving Bible-based cults, one of the most significant questions they struggle with as they form their post-cult identities is what to do regarding their faith. There are unique complications for people in Bible-based cults, because some were Christians before being drawn into the cult, and they would like to reclaim the positive aspects of their Christianity that were valuable pieces of their pre-cult identity. However, some elements of the cult they are leaving have been mixed in with the faith that was once such a comfort to them, and it is challenging to separate out the good from the bad. Moreover, they may be faced with some in their families and support systems who are well-meaning but skeptical about the former member’s involvement with any religion, failing to distinguish healthy ways for people to access their spirituality from that which is toxic. Doug and Wendy Duncan have been through this maze themselves, and they offer suggestions for people leaving Bible-based cults who want to preserve for themselves what is helpful and life-affirming in Christianity while leaving behind those expressions which are cultic. |

Ministering To Those Who Have Been In Cults Or Who Have Been Spiritually Abused |
In this workshop, Doug and Wendy Duncan draw upon their experiences trying to reintegrate into healthy, mainstream Christianity after a long-term involvement in a Bible-based cult to describe what ministers, churches, and individual believers did that was and was not helpful to them. They will emphasize some common mistakes that were made and suggest alternative approaches to minister to people recovering from cultic or spiritual abuse |
Doug and Wendy will be presenting a workshop on ministering to people who have been in spiritually abusive groups on March 7, 2008 at the Evangelical Ministries to New Religions' conference at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City.
Wendy will be speaking at the Greenville Ministers' Alliance on February 26, 2008 in Greenville, Texas.
The Duncans will be in Omaha, Nebraska on November 2-3, 2007 for a conference for former cult members. Doug and Wendy will conduct a presentation on spiritual/cultic abuse and recovery.
Doug and Wendy Duncan will host a book exhibit at the Dallas Episcopal Diocesan convention at Southfork Ranch, October 18-20, 2007.
Wendy will be presenting on spiritual abuse and recovery at St Mark's United Methodist Church in Mesquite, Texas on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 10:00 am.
Who We Are
Doug and Wendy Duncan are former members of a Bible-based cult. After leaving the cult where he was a member for over twenty years, Doug earned his master’s degree in counseling and is now a licensed professional counselor. Wendy is a licensed social worker and holds a master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is also the author of I Can’t Hear God Anymore: Life in a Dallas Cult, the true story of the couple’s involvement in and eventual separation from a Bible-based cult. Since renouncing their membership in a Bible-based cult, Doug and Wendy Duncan began a ministry to help individuals coming out of cultic groups and to teach churches how better to minister to these hurting people. The Duncans are available for author visits, speaking engagements, and training workshops on the topic of cults, spiritual abuse, and recovery. Visits may include their personal testimony, an introduction to cults, training on helping individuals coming out of cultic groups, warning signs of potentially abusive groups, and understanding cult mind control.
Doug and Wendy can be reached by email at info@dallascult.com
Please Note:
There are no fees for author visits, speaking engagements, or training workshops. The Duncans live in the Dallas metroplex and travel expenses are requested if visits are outside of Texas or overnight stays are necessary.
